Finnair (Helsinki) has announced a new route to Chongqing, China’s largest and fastest growing city from the Helsinki hub. The new route will be opened in May 2012, flying to Chongqing four times a week with Finnair’s Airbus A340 aircraft. Finnair is the first airline to open a direct service from Europe to Chongqing.

Finnair to operate a biofuel flight between Amsterdam and Helsinki

$

Finnair (Helsinki) aims to fly its first biofuel flight from Amsterdam and Helsinki next week. This will be the longest commercial biofuel flight flown anywhere in the world to date.

According to the airline, “Finnair will accept for permanent use only a biofuel alternative that is socially, ecologically and economically sustainable. For example, the cultivation of the biomass used in the production of biofuel must significantly reduce GHG emissions, must not compromise food production or lead to biodiversity degradation or deforestation.”

For its first biofuel flight, Finnair will use biofuel made from recycled vegetable oil (used cooking oil) supplied by SkyNRG in a mixture that is 50% biofuel and 50% ordinary aviation fuel. Finnair and SkyNRG have agreed to jointly work on a structural supply chain, as both parties firmly believe that the adoption of “green routes” by airlines will help accelerate the development of sustainable and affordable jet fuels, which have the potential to reduce aviation emissions by up to 80% in the long-term.

At this time, Finnair aims to fly at least three Amsterdam-Helsinki flights using a 50% biofuel blend in both engines. Refuelling is done at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

Finnair flies the Angry Birds to Singapore

Finnair (Helsinki) flew the world-famous Angry Birds, developed by the Finnish company Rovio, to Singapore on September 20. During the flight, fans of the mobile device game competed in the Angry Birds Asian Challenge.

The Angry Birds game has been downloaded to various platforms, including smart phones and tablets, over 350 million times.

Finnair cashed in on the online craze by flying Angry Birds’ most dedicated fans. The five most popular fans were selected by a jury and were awarded tickets to Singapore. During the flight, the Angry Birds fans and other flight passengers were able to participate in a competition on games consoles distributed to passengers and specially programmed for this event. The winner became the proud holder of the very first Angry Birds Asian Challenge title.

As mentioned, Angry Birds is a puzzle video game developed by Finnish computer game developer Rovio Mobile. Inspired primarily by a sketch of stylized wingless birds, the game was first released for Apple’s iOS in December 2009. Since that time, over 12 million copies of the game have been purchased from Apple’s App Store, which has prompted the company to design versions for other touchscreen-based smart phones, such as those using the Android operating system, among others.

In the game, players use a slingshot to launch birds at pigs stationed on or within various structures, with the intent of destroying all the pigs on the playfield. As players advance through the game, new birds appear, some with special abilities that can be activated by the player. Rovio Mobile has supported Angry Birds with numerous free updates that add additional game content, and the company has even released stand-alone holiday and promotional versions of the game.

Finnair (Helsinki) will be the first airline to introduce a bright light headset designed to help passengers adapt better to jet lag. The Valkee bright light headset, a product of a Finnish design company called Valkee, is a safe and natural way to simulate the effects of daylight to alleviate symptoms caused by changes in the circadian rhythm and by shortage of natural daylight. Finnair is arranging a pilot program to test the benefits of the device for airline passengers on particularly long flights, where the need to adjust to a new time zone often causes natural challenges.

The test program will be offered to passengers in business class on the route between Helsinki and Shanghai for a period of one month, beginning at the end of March. The passengers who wish to take part in the pilot program will be asked to fill in a questionnaire after testing the Valkee device in accordance with the instructions of the cabin crew. After the test period, the Valkee bright light device will be added as a sales item for Finnair in May.

Finnair’s (Helsinki) Caravelle days are being remembered in a movie currently being filmed in Stockholm. The movie centers around the hijacking of a Finnair Caravelle and is called “The Hijack That Went South“. Le Caravelle Club’s Sud Aviation SE.210 Caravelle III SE-DAI (msn 210) has been repainted in the 1966 livery of Finnair as “Super Caravelle” OH-LSB. This OH-LSB is also named “Tampere”. The shade of blue used in the repainting appears to be a lighter shade of blue than what was used in this era. The original OH-LSB (msn 182), also named “Tampere”, was actually a larger SE.210 Caravelle 10B3.

Finnair selects IAE V2533-A5 engines for its five new Airbus A321s to replace the four Boeing 757-200s

Finnair (Helsinki) has selected IAE International Aero Engines AG to supply engines for its five new Airbus A321 extended range aircraft, entering the Finnair fleet from September 2013. The IAE V2533-A5 engines offer Finnair a significant advantage in fuel efficiency over the competition, saving about 300 tons of fuel per year per aircraft, according to aircraft supplier Airbus test data. The engines also operate well within noise limitations set by ICAO and the EU.

Finnair announced in June 2010 an order for five Airbus aircraft to replace the four Boeing 757s currently in the fleet. The new A321s will be quieter and more comfortable for passengers, as well as about 5 per cent more fuel efficient. The move also enables more flexibility and interoperability between European scheduled and leisure flights, driving up aircraft utilization and further reducing per-passenger emissions.
